N95-8gb vs E71

A reader of mine have asked for a comparison between N95-8gb and e71 , as I'd been using both the devices for some time , I've decided to run a comparison for him when both are used in real life .

N958gb and E71 are both great devices in their class , when looking for a media centric entertainment phone nothing can beat N958gb sure variants have come touting to be better but for me N958gb sets the standard . Where E71 is concerned it's on top of Business Centric phones want a portable powerhouse for office use E71 is your best choice .

Having said there is not much difference between the two in software wise sure FP1 and Fp2 makes a difference but it's not so great feature wise the comparison is as follows

Screen Size : I find E71 to cover a large amount of things a compared to N958gb , it's better for me as I mostly use it for emails , ebooks and Quran , the extra size leads to more icons on standby , more shortcuts on hand and eaier on the eyes but N95-8gb has an advantage of screen rotate with the builtin accelerometer whicb E71 lacks

Battery : N957gb fails miserably here with my use of EDGE and GPS it lasts less then a day while E71 survives for 2 days

Size : N958gb is bulky and 'fat' and E71 is sleek and curves in the all the right places , I feel lsuggish when holding N958gb but E71 rests nicely in my hand , the weight distribution on E71 is just fine and N958gb is more heavier in the bottom thus feels awkward

Keyboard : had some trouble with N958gb's keayboard because of my large fingures for E71 the problem is solved as I use my finger tips still nothing beats a Apple Bluetooth keyboard which I connected to my N958gb

Storage : 8gb is 8gb and internal storage means faster operation but when it comes to E71 expandability is the keyword I got 2gb from Nokia which I upgraded to 4gb ( 8gb is not available in Micro SD in Pakistan ) and whenever I need to add heavy stuff I simply pop it out and stick it in the card reader of my laptop via adapter for faster transfers , in N958gb it's sluggish USB which take eons to transfer data. On the other hand I had been getting " Memory Card in use Error on E71 when connected via USB which I had to encrypt to solve the problem

Media and Camera : here N958gb beats E71 and leaves it far behind nothing beats the stereo speakers on N958gb , the crisp clear sound is far far far superior then on E71 , on camera too Carl Zeiss vs regular camera , it's like comparing my Nikon to my old Intel camera

Ease of use : my E71 hangs and it hangs a lot could be due to botched job of hacking I did on it to run unsigned application but hanging up and restarting when receiving a call is unheard of on my N958gb

the looks : E71 is sleeeeeeeek and sexy with metallic outlook but a finger print magnet while N958gb is bulky but it's rubberized black is nice too but with much of use as in my case the rubber wipes off leaving patches on the body

TV Out : one featture which I miss the most on E71 , on N958gb with TV out I had it hooked up in my car to a screen having my own carputer and GPS navigation system none like that for E71

GPS : E71 GPS is way faster then N958gb when locking on satellites while on N958gb I had to open the slider for it to be better which could lead to a broken screen :)

in my opinion when using E71 or N958gb , I very seldom miss the basic features sure when using E71 and in need of a better pic , i miss my 5mp camera but when going for heavy sms , email or reading the latest by James PAtterson E71 rocks

It's upto you what you require in a phone , if you need one for business use go for E71 and if one for media N958gb and variants kicks butt

Comparingly

Farhan

Hi there. I'm the person who had asked this about this comparison in the other post.

Thank you so much! It's an excellent detailed comparison and I'm so glad to have a real life person review instead of reading about prototypes tested by critics.

No disrespect to the critics, but they are always nitpicking and complaining about things which dont even matter in real life.

Thanks alot again :)

I also wanted to ask another question, in ur post i got the idea that the E71 is display is better for eBooks and emails as compared to N95 8GB. But isnt E71 screen smaller?

N95 8GB screen is 2.8'' while E71 is 2.36''.... So is E71 display better for ebooks because of landscape view? Or something else?

Sorry another question. What are your views about the Nokia N82 with Xenon flash as compared to N95 8gb?

Xenon flash is good for takin pictures in dark areas or total darkness, so I was also considering N82.

Most of my pics are indoors, so this answer will really help. How has your experience been of taking night pictures with N95 8GB and E71?

For screen size what I'll do is take pics of the same text running on Mobipocket on both the phones with N958gb in landscape mode so you can compare yourself which is better . I think E71 has a better screen resolution I need to confirm that .
I've haven't had experience with N82 , my friend has one but they don't let me touch their phones , I often install software on them ;) so can't comment on the pic quality but what I've read and heard Xenon is better than LED Flash , read comparisons on the net , here I apologize for not being any help

Thanks for the quick reply! :)
And no problem about N82, you have helped so much with E71 and N95 8GB. Can't thank you enough for going through so much trouble! :)

Hi Farhan this is Farhat,

In june I replaced my N70 with N73 and was initially happy with the upgrade. Gradually I found out that apart from the better camera and a bit of multimedia/screen eye candy, I had not got much to show for. Also on the downside was the fact that the N73 had memory issues, hanging problems, and If I open more applications than 3 it would shut down one on its own, also the keypad ergonomics was worse than N70.
Finally after 4 months of struggling I am selling it off (naturally at a loss). Now I wish to move on and the two phones that I could home in were the Nokia E71 and N95. The quest to know them and compare them brought me to many pages including this one.
I wish I could get some personal advise so I hope Farhan you help me out.
I am not really a power office user, I have a quite job (unrelated to computers and web) but I run a few site for my small part-time web company, and have to be connected with e-mail most of the time. My emails would not be typically long just 4-5 liners.
I also need to do browsing as well as logging onto my servers for maintenance etc jobs.
I do sms sparingly, but love to use chatting, and other web-based apps like widsets, rss news, talkonaut, mig etc.
I need a good camera too but only to use images decent enough for online use (I was more thanhappy with my N73 camera).
Now the N71 I am getting for arounr Rs. 20-21K and N95 for 19K(for the old version) and 24.5K for 8Gb.
Plz plz give me some personalised advice so that I am able to choose and not regret as I did with my choice of N73 last time.
I love the different look of the E71 ( it really sands out, thats also because so few people own it) but do not wish to be left behind on the tech advances of N95 by saving 2-3 thousand rupees. (God am I confused)
Thank you for your patience, may Allah bless us all in this holy month.
Love

Mr Farhat , Thanks for the comment , coming to your dilemma , if you want high end multimedia features then N958gb ( please do not get plain N95 it's junk comparatively ) I'm more inclined towards E71 is first ease of carrying due to slimmer form factor , faster response then N958gb , expandable with memory , offers intranet access (haven;t used it yet ) for your emails and chat it got a decent keyboard . The difference between both n958gb and e71 is negligable where software is concerned on leaving out on technological advancements all you are going to miss out on N958gb will be builtin memory , tv out , accelerometer ( believe me it's of little use in real world half the time I use it as my car's inclinometer to annoy my significant other :) a very decent camera , E71 camera is crap but it does have business card reader not available with N958gb . I had also used N73 it was a decent phone and sometimes I miss it , neevr had any hanging up problems read pelnty of books on it but when I fell for N958gb it had to go I advice you to go to a Nokia outlet and take both in hand and see which seems better nothing beats the real hand on exprience then you can decide what you want , any other questions you can always leave a comment here

Dear Farhan, I read your entire post and I wish to thank you for the information you have posted on the forum. I have a small concern which probably you can resolve. I just need to know if there is any variance while listening to songs using a headphone in E 71 and N 95(std). My whole and sole purpose of buying a phone is to pass time by listening to music.
